Description
Pain is recognized as a highly subjective experience that nearly everyone will experience at some point in their lives. Individuals who are racial minorities, however, face significant challenges and inequity in receiving quality pain management.
It is important for medical professionals, behavioral health clinicians, and other allied helping professions to be aware of the racial disparity that exists in the context of pain. This e-learning course is designed to meet five objectives:
1) Describe the body of existing empirical evidence demonstrating racial disparity in pain management across the care continuum; 2) Provide real-life testimonials from racially diverse patients regarding their lived experiences of healthcare utilization
as they relate to pain; 3) Explain the role of implicit bias in clinical practice; 4) Identify approaches to combat implicit bias to facilitate equitable pain management; and 5) Describe the role of empathy in pain management. With access to both
empirical research findings and patient experiential information, this course offers an innovative approach to better understanding racial issues as they relate to pain management.
The course is comprised of 4 modules:
- Module 1: “Defining racial disparity in pain management: An overview.”
- Module 2: “Painfully unaware: Provider implicit bias in pain management”
- Module 3: “Toward more equitable pain management: Combatting implicit bias”
- Module 4: “Compassion for patient suffering: Fostering empathy in pain management”
In each module, learners are provided additional resources and readings for further learning. A pre and posttest is administered to evaluate changes in knowledge of and attitude towards the issue of racial disparity in pain management.
